Cristie Kerr is showing that, for a small equipment manufacturer, an investment in the LPGA Tour can pay off big.
Kerr won the Michelob Ultra Open last week using two wedges from Scratch Golf, a 54-degree Satin finish wedge bent to 52 degrees with a DOG grind and a 60-degree wedge bent to 58 degrees with a SPN grind.
“She put them in the week after she won (at Safeway) last year and since then, she hasn’t finished out of the top 20,” said Paul Friedrich, president of tour operations for Scratch Golf.
“She’s been very tried and true to the Cleveland shape,” he continued. “With our ability to do custom work we could make the shape look like what she wants and move a little bit better into the fitting aspect. The wedges are 1018 carbon steel, the softest in golf, and the feel of the golf clubs is better than what she had before.”
Kerr is also testing Scratch golf irons. She has two sets for testing, the EZ-1 and AR-1 models; both are cavity backs with a traditional shape.
Scratch Golf has also recently signed Jeong Jang, a two-time LPGA Tour winner.
“We see a great value in regards to the ladies,” Friedrich said. “We’re not like Titleist or Callaway that has to sell thousands of clubs to be profitable for the year. We can get exposure without breaking the bank account like the PGA Tour guys.”
